Biography

Henry Meredith was born on 10 Oct 1846 in Tullow, Co Carlow, IrelandG.² He was baptised on 13 Dec 1846 in Tullow Church of Ireland, Co. Carlow.² He and Frances Olivia Fraser were married on 12 Jan 1875 in St. Audoen's Church, Dublin, IrelandG.³ He died on 20 Feb 1917, at age 70, in Mercer’s Hospital, DublinG. He was buried in Mount Jerome Cemetery, Dublin.

He enlisted in the Royal Irish Constabulary on 6 Oct 1865 aged 18 and started his active service in Queen’s Co. from 14 Feb 1866. He was seriously assaulted on 5 May 1870 when he was attacked with a ‘hedge slasher’, receiving a near-fatal wound to the head. A newspaper report of the subsequent trial is appended below.

He received a special pension from the R.I.C. due to his severe injury, which comprised a one-off payment of £13 from the Police Fund and an annual pension of £27-14-0 from 1872 onwards, which was then paid after his death on 20 Feb 1917 to his son Francis Ormsby Meredith.

He settled in Dublin and was recorded as Superintendent of a Lodging House on Schoolhouse Lane, Molesworth Place, Dublin in 1878. He worked for many years at St James Gate Guiness’s Brewery, in a clerical position.

Saunders's News-Letter 11 March 1871, pg. 2:
"William Creagh was indicted for assaulting and inflicting grievous bodily injury on Constable Meredith, at Kildowney, on the 9th of May last. It appeared that on the above day, at about four o'clock in the afternoon, the prisoner and another man passed the police barracks at Kildowney assisting a drunken man home. The constable, who was then on duty, advised them to go home quietly, at which the prisoner made some angry observations, and passed on. Shortly afterwards he turned back, and struck the constable from behind a violent blow on the head with a sharp implement called a 'hedge slasher,' inflicting thereby a dreadful wound, which very nearly proved fatal to the unfortunate constable. The prisoner then ran off, but was shortly after captured by the police. Several witnesses were examined. The jury retuned a verdict of 'Guilty.' His Lordship sentenced the prisoner to five years' penal servitude, with hard labour."

He died on 20 Aug 1918, at age 75, in Waimate NZG.² He was buried in Waimate Cemetery, South Canterbury.

Richard Meredith followed his sisters out to New Zealand, arriving at Lyttleton on the 15th September 1862 on 'The Accrington'. He was the first Headmaster at a Church School at Woodend just north of Christchurch. He was a staunch member of the Methodist Church and an Orangeman.

Richard bought land which he farmed in North Canterbury as his sons grew older, and he later took up politics. He was the Member of Parliament for Ashley in Canterbury for two terms.
