John Meredith was born ca. 1790. He was baptised on 11 Jul 1790 in Tullow Church of Ireland, Co. Carlow.² He and Anne Needham were married on 25 Jul 1817 in Tullow, Co Carlow, IrelandG.²

The baptismal entry read: " Baptised John son of Edwd. and Mary Meredith received, and Richd. son of ditto baptised". It is not known whether Richard is in fact John's twin, however another Richard of this family was baptised in 1792, indicating that the earlier one had not survived.

John's third daughter Eliza came to Australia with her new husband John Jackson in 1857/58. Her death certificate dated March 8 1891gives her father as John Meredith, Major, HMS 56th Lightfoot Regiment, and her mother as Ann Drury. The information on Eliza Jackson's death certificate is somewhat questionable, since it was provided by Eliza's Australian born son Henry who most likely knew his Irish grandparents only by hearsay. Current research indicates that John Meredith's wife was in fact Ann Needham, while to date there is no information about a "Major" John Meredith. The family's occupational class (skilled trades) seems inconsistent with officer status. Perhaps "Sergeant Major" would be more appropriate.
