The 1911 Canada Census for Prince Albert, Saskatchewan: Benjamin Ralph, farmer, born October 1834, Ireland, immigrated 1903. The 1916 census shows Benjamin (72, wid) and Armitage (28, single) farming in Blaine Lake, Saskatchewan. Dr. Ralph remained in charge of Craigmore and a smaller area around it, until his passing in 1930, at the age of 87."

Morley Armitage Ralph (1879-1950)

She was appointed the first headmistress of the Anglican Herschel Girls School, established in Cape Town, South Africa, after having been head of the Diocesan School in Grahamstown. Biography

John Gray Ralph was born on 12 Nov 1895 in Bristol, EnglandG. He died on 18 Jun 1916, at age 20, in France. He was buried in Bois-de-Noulette British Cemetery, Aix-Noulette, I. D. 8., France.

He was living in Canada in 1914 when WW1 broke out, having arrived there from England in May 1911 with his elder sister Morley. The Canadian WW1 Attestation Papers show that he enlisted at Winnipeg on 22 Dec 1914, aged 19, as a private in the 32nd Regiment of the Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF), with service no. 81723. He gave his occupation as Farmer. He sailed from Halifax, Nova Scotia, on 23 Feb 1915 on the troop ship Vaderland, disembarking in England on 7 March 1915.

He was on duty at Festubert in France on 17 May 1915 when his medical record showed that he contracted enteritis. He was transferred to hospital at Boulogne and Wimeraux and treated there until 7 July, when he was transferred back to England and admitted to Graylingwell War Hospital in Chichester with severe influenza. He was moved to the Canadian Convalescent Hospital, Monks Horton with enteric fever on 27 July and discharged two days later, only to be readmitted on 28 Aug with enteric fever again. He was moved again to Woodcote Park Military Convalescent Hospital, Epsom on 11 Sep and finally discharged on the 29th of that month.

He was discharged from the 8th Battalion of the CEF on 19 Jan 1916 having earned a commission in the British Army as a 2nd Lieutenant with the 7th (City of London) Battalion of the London Regiment.
He was killed in action on 18th June that year in northern France and is buried in Bois-de-Noulette cemetery, south of Bethune.

His obituary was published in the 1st July 1916 edition of the Kildare Observer and Eastern Counties Advertiser, as follows:

"ENLISTED IN CANADA AT 19; WON COMMISSION, AND FELL IN ACTION.
(From Nottingham Daily Express).
Second-Lieutenant John Gray Ralph, whose death in action has been reported officially to his family, was a grandson of the late Mr. James Gray, of 21, Regent street, Nottingham, and formerly of The Abbey, Roscrea.
Mr. Ralph had many friends in the city and neighbourhood. He was in Canada when the war began, and waited only for his 19th birthday to enlist as a private in the first contingent of the Canadian troops. In the second draft of these he returned to England in 1915, and served near Festubert until invalided by enteric. After his recovery he received a commission in one of the London regiments, and went abroad again less than a month ago. Mr. Ralph Gray was a grand nephew of the late Mr. W. S. Gray, Naas."¹
