Rice Meredith1
M, #3053, b. about 1660, d. 26 February 1732
Parents
Biography
Rice Meredith was born ca. 1660 in Ireland. He and
Elizabeth were married. He died on 26 Feb 1732, at age ~72, in Queen's Co., Ireland
G. He was buried in St. Brigid’s Church of Ireland, Rosenallis, Co. Laois, Ireland
G.
He is possibly the Rice Meredith mentioned in 1691 in the Wicklow Monthly Meeting Record Book of the Quakers, along with a Mathias Meredith. In 1696 a Rice Meredith of Templerainey leased land at Ballymoney in Co. Wicklow from Ralph Howard of Dublin. It is assumed that this is the same person who subsequently occupied the farm and land at Rearymore.
The earliest reference placing Rice Meredith at Rearymore is a deed of 1713 between him (along with several other tenants) and their landlord the Charles, the Earl of Mountrath.
He is most likely to be the Rice Meredith of 1724 mentioned in the Deed Poll of Thomas Meredyth of Garr. He is possibly the son of Rice Meredith of Oghill, Co. Wicklow mentioned in the Hearth Money Rolls of 1669.
The inscription on his tombstone reads:
"Here lyeth the body of Mr Rice Meredith who departed this life Feb'y 26. Year of our lord 1732 aged 72 years"
DNA analysis shows that the Rearymore Merediths through Rice’s son Thomas are closely related to the Clonenagh Merediths for which there is documentation in the late 1700s. The intermediate ancestors that form the link between the Clonenagh branch and Rice Meredith are unknown, so a fictitious ’son’ called “Early Clonenagh Ancestors” has been added to represent the link. This is not a real person and there may have been more than one intermediate ancestor linking Rice Meredith with the Clonenagh descendants.

G.
His name in the baptism register recorded as "Rice Evylin Stanly". He was born at Derrylough and was orphaned at a young age. His mother died a week after he was born, and he was not yet 14 when his father died. It is not known where he lived after the death of his father. However, by 1901 he was living in England. He was enumerated in the 1901 census (taken on 31 March) as a boarder at 140 The Quay, Wivenhoe, Essex, and described as Evelyn Meredith, male, 19, single, apprentice engineer.
He enlisted with the Royal Engineers on 20 May 1901 at Colchester (with his name given as Edward Meredith), and was discharged on 18 Aug 1905 on payment of £25. The service records for that time name an uncle William of Inchicore, Dublin and a William L. Waters as a next of kin (there is also a Brother William of Inchicore overscored with “Deceased”). William Leopold Waters was a brother of his step-mother Emily.
There is some confusion over his first names. Canadian military records name him as Edward Stanley Meredith, but the Commonwealth war graves record has him listed as Evelyn Rice (the service number confirms that both names refer to the same man). In the 1911 census his name is also recorded as Evelyn Rice. The index to marriage registrations lists him as Edward Meredith in 1906.
He was enumerated in the 1906 Census of Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan (which began on June 24, 1906) as a Hired Man at Calgary, with the date of immigration given as 1906. According to the 1911 census, Evelyn Rice came to Canada in 1905 and his wife arrived in 1906 (in Canada he was known as "Mickey"). His occupation in 1911 was merchant, and he was in partnership "Ritchie and Meredith Provisions." They settled in Lethbridge, Alberta where he enlisted in the armed forces 28 December, 1914. He was said to be 31 years, 11 months old. He was 5' 5" tall, had dark hair, fair complexion and hazel eyes. He had two tattoos: an Irish harp on the back of his right forearm and a ship on the back of his left forearm. He indicated that he had been born in "Rosanallis", Queen's County, Ireland 21 June 1883. His occupation was Teamster. His next of kin was his wife Annie M. Meredith of 719-15th St. North, Lethbridge, Alberta (this is also the address indicated on the 1911 census). He had previously served 14 months in the military in South Africa. He died while en route to France.
