Chevalier Jacob Letterstedt1

M, #631, b. 1796, d. 18 March 1862

Biography

Chevalier Jacob Letterstedt was born in 1796 in Lallerstedt, ?stergtland, Sweden.2,3 He and Maria Barendina Becker were married on 14 Aug 1822 in Evangelsche Luther Kirke, Cape Town.4,5 He and Lydia Boys were married on 8 Oct 1851 in St Martin in the Fields, London, EnglandG.6,7,8 He died on 18 Mar 1862, at age ~66, in Paris, FranceG.9
Chevalier Jacob Letterstedt was a Swedish businessman who settled in South Africa (Cape Colony). He arrived at Cape Town in 1820, where he made his fortune in grain trade. Later he founded the company that became South African Breweries. He was Consul of Sweden-Norway in 1841. He was living at Mariandahl, Newlands, Cape of Good Hope, South Africa in 1845. The farm at Mariandahl is now Newlands Cricket Ground.
The Cape Town Historical Society has published the following details about Jacob Letterstedt:
BRIEF HISTORY OF THE JOSEPHINE MILL, Home of the Cape Town Historical Society
In 1975, the Josephine Mill was given as a ruin to this Society by Myra East. The Historical Society [of Cape Town] was instrumental in gaining generous support from corporate bodies and the University of Cape Town, who together recreated a working water mill.
The Mill was founded in 1840 by Jacob Letterstedt, a Swede, who named it in honour of Crown Princess Josephine of Sweden who had granted him an official audience in 1837. Jacob arrived in Cape Town almost penniless in a party of 1820 Settlers, but he had the good fortune of finding favour with a widow, Maria Dreyer, owner of two farms in Newlands, Louwvliet and Questenberg. Maria, though 18 years his senior, offered Jacob marriage, which he accepted, and they married on 14 August 1822. Jacob unified the farms as Mariendahl, named after his wife. Though the mill stood alongside the Liesbeek River, Jacob led the water to the mill race along an aquaduct from the Newlands Spring near Newlands Avenue. At present, the huge cast-iron wheel uses water pumped out of the river.
The building housing the milling machinery is the bulk of Jacob's original mill. The five-storey section attached, with the free-standing chimney, was added when the mill was converted to steam operation some time between 1860 and 1880. After Jacob died in 1862, his estate passed to his daughter, Lydia, by a second marriage. The estate was managed as J. Letterstedt & Co.3,4,10,11

Biography

Edward Nugent Meredyth Martin was born on 9 May 1881.1 He died on 30 Sep 1916, at age 35, in France.2 He was buried in Péronne Road Cemetery, Maricourt, France.
From the Eastbourne College Roll of Honour 1914-1918:
"Lieutenant Edward Nugent Meredyth Martin was born 9 May 1881, the son of Eustace and Jane Martin of Eastbourne. He was a member of School House, 1894-98, and went up to Cambridge in October 1898, with a view to obtaining a commission in the Army. His ambition was fulfilled sooner than he expected, as, on the outbreak of the South African war, he received a commission in the 3rd Battalion, the West Riding Regiment, transferring to the 5th (Royal Irish) Lancers. He served throughout the campaign, gaining the Queen's South Africa and King's South Africa medals. A year after the war, on returning to England, he resigned his commission. In 1914 he rejoined his old regiment, and was attached to the 5th Machine Gun Squadron. He was posted to Ireland, and when the rebels posted the original Proclamation of the Republic on the doors of the Dublin Post Office in 1916, it was Martin who removed it. On the reverse of the original proclamation, now in a museum, is the following inscription. "This proclamation of the rebels was torn down by Edward Nugent Meredyth Martin late of the Irish Lancers then of the Imperial Yeomanry from the doors of the Post Office in 1916. He was subsequently killed at Ypres on September 30th, 1916'. He is buried in Peronne Road Cemetery, Maricourt, Somme (grave III.C.24)."

The reference to Ypres is probably incorrect as the date of death corresponds to the Battle of the Somme, which is where he was buried.3

Edmund Henry Turton1

M, #649, b. about 1825

Biography

Edmund Henry Turton was born ca. 1825. He and Cecilia Mary Leeson were married on 8 Jul 1856.1
The details of the Will and Bequests, published in the Illustrated London News are as follows: "The will (dated October 25, 1880) of Mr. Edmund Henry Turton, J.P., D.L., of Upsall Castle, Thirsk, Yorkshire, who died on July 30 last, was proved on December 21 by Edmund Russborough Turton, the son and sole executor, the value of the personal estate being D18,903. The testator gives £200 and his jewels to his wife, and she is to have the use during widowhood of Larpool Hall, together with the furniture and contents thereof, and £100 to his son Robert Bell Turton, he having been already provided for by the will of his great-grandfather Robert Bell Livesey. He charges certain lands and premises at Roxby, Yorkshire, with the payment of £1000 to his son Ralph Douglas Turton, £4000 to his daughter Barbara Josephine Turton, and £3000 to his daughter Cecilia Marianne Turton. On the death or remarriage of his wife he gives Larpool Hall, upon trust, for his son Ralph Douglas Turton, but should his son succeed to certain property under the will of his cousin, Mrs. Jane Sanders, this gift is not to take effect, and Larpool Hall is to pass to his eldest son, Edmund Russborough Turton. He devises Upsall Castle and other hereditaments and premises to the use of his eldest son, Edmund Russborough for life, with remainder to his first and other sons, according to seniority in tail male; the picture ‘The Gipsy Fortune-teller,’ the Sevres china clock presented by Richard Brinsley Sheridan to Dr. Turton, the gold vase given by the Duke of Northumberland to Dr. Turton, and other articles are to go and be held therewith as heirlooms. With the exception of certain closes of land at Roxby and Lythe, he leaves the residue of his real and personal estate to his son Edmund."
