Ambrose Crawley was the son of Richard Crawley, a clerk. He was a widower, living at 57 George Street at the time of his marriage in 1839, and was in the East India company’s civil service. He was listed in the East India register and directory of 1810 as second assistant to the collector and magistrate of Chingleput. He had been appointed a writer on the Madras establishment in 1809. His address in the year of his death was Hardwick Lodge, Chepstow.^4,7,5
