His obituary appeared in the Peterborough Examiner, Ontario on 18 May 2004 as follows:

“CARNALL, Captain Herbert Bruce, D. S.C., C.D., R.C.N. (Retired) 1911-2004 - After retiring from a long and distinguished career in the Royal Canadian Navy and with the Department of External Affairs, H. Bruce Carnall, formerly of Toronto, died in Peterborough on April 24, 2004 at the age of 92. Beloved husband of the late Mary Mason (1991) and the late Jean Read (1999). Loving father of Linda Gardner (Wallace Heinbuch) of Baden and Sheila Carnall of Kingston and devoted grandfather of Mary, Susan (Daniel Murray), Stephen, Bruce, Cadillac, Sarah and Adam. Great grandfather of Brandon. Throughout his life Bruce was a passionate skier, avid reader and researcher , and collector. He was instrumental in founding the Toronto Ski Club and encouraging the sport in Canada. His enthusiasm for his hobbies and his leadership are fondly remembered. Cremation has taken place and, at Bruce's request, no funeral service is planned. She graduated in 1939 as Bachelor of Medicine & Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from Melbourne University. After graduating she became Assistant Superintendent at the Infectious Diseases Hospital, Adelaide, and then Head of the Pathology Department. Greenvale Sanatorium, Melbourne. From 1956 until 1978 she ran a private Pathology Practice in East Melbourne, the only woman to do so at the time.²
