Isabella BAILEY was born ca. 1816 in Queen's Co., IrelandG. She and Philip MEREDITH were married on 14 Apr 1849 in Rosenallis, Queen’s Co., IrelandG.² She died on 11 Apr 1852, at age ~36, in Queen's Co., IrelandG.³ She was buried on 13 Apr 1852 in Queen's Co., IrelandG.⁴

Philip Meredith and Isabella Bailey had no children. The birth of a Joseph Meredith was wrongly attributed to them in an online genealogy through a mis-reading of the gravestone for Joseph Henry who died in 1896, the son of Philip’s 2nd wife Gertrude Meredith.

Isabella is commemorated in a plaque inside the church of St Brigid’s, Rosenallis:
"Sacred to the memory of Isabella Meredith wife of Philip Meredith esq. of Reary Valley daughter of Christopher Bailey Esquire of Cappalawn. She was truly an humble Christian endeavouring in all things to adorn the doctrine of God her Savour (sic) she departed this life 11th April 1852 aged 36 years. Rejoycing in hope of Glory of God. For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall be made alive. Cor. 15 Ch. 22. This tribute of affection was erected by a bereaved husband to the best of wives."
The burial record indicates that Isabella was 35 at the time of her death.¹

Rice MEREDITH¹

Rice MEREDITH was born ca. 1738 in Ireland. He and Mary HORNBY were married in 1759 in Diocese of Ossory, Ferns & Leighlin. He died in Jul 1817, at age ~79, in Queen's Co., IrelandG. He was buried on 11 Jul 1817 in St. Brigid’s Church of Ireland, Rosenallis, Co. Laois, IrelandG.

The earliest reference to Rice Meredith of Rearymore is in a deed of 1751 (cited in a later deed of 1765) in which he was one of three lives named in the lease, and described as the eldest son of Thomas Meredith.

A later reference to Rice Meredith is in the articles of intermarriage with Mary Hornby in 1759, which describes him as being in the possession of lands in Rearymore known as Clonegark. He is named in a deed of 1760 as the eldest son of Thomas Meredith.

A further deed of 1760 refers to Rice Meredith and Jane Hornby (the sister of his wife Mary) being assigned the right to the lands of Clonenagh, Cappagh and Dirraugh in 1757 for the payment of a debt owed by his mother in law Mary Hornby. It is unclear whether this is connected to the establishment of the Meredith branch in Conenagh.

Rice Meredith was listed in the Queen’s County Poll Books of 1760 and 1779.

There is some uncertainty over his date of death. A Rice Meredith of Queen’s County is included in the list of obituaries for 1801 in the Gentleman’s Magazine (vol. 71, part2, p. 1213). This is consistent with the entry in the Index to Prerogative Wills for “Rice Meredith, Clonegark, Queen’s Co., Gentleman”, indicating that probate was granted in 1801.

On the other hand, there is an unpublished report of an inscription on a gravestone in St. Brigid’s Rosenallis transcribed as “"To the memory of Rice Meredith esq of Reary Valley who departed this life 11 July 1817 aged 79." However, no record of a burial in that year has been found in the Rosenallis parish registers, which date from 1801.

There is no evidence of there having been two Rice Merediths of Cloneygark in addition to the son Rice who died in 1848.^2,3,4,5

Charles Henry Coote MEREDITH was born ca. 1770 in Queen's Co., IrelandG.² He and Frances WARBURTON were married in 1798 in Ireland.³ He and Katherine MANN were married ca. 1823 in Ireland. He and Lucy WYLY were married on 8 Feb 1834 in St. Mark’s Church of Ireland, DublinG.⁴ He died on 18 Mar 1852, at age ~82, in Prospect Hill, Finglas, Dublin, IrelandG. He was buried on 20 Mar 1852 in Mount Jerome Cemetery, Dublin 6.

He was named as the son of Rice Meredith in a lease for 3 lives dated 1786 between Edward Dunne of Brittas and Rice Meredith. The other two sons Philip and Rice were also named in the lease.

His career as Revenue Officer and Tax Collector is mentioned in a number of records:
- In October 1800 he was appointed Tax collector at an annual salary of £100.
- In 1812 he was a hearth money collector.
- In January 1819 he was appointed First Class, Assessor of Taxes, at an annual salary of £200.
- In 1824 he had completed 24 years, 6 months of service.
- In November 1825 his position as Assessor with the "Late Department of the Assessed Taxes" was abolished; his "salary and emoluments" totalled £230 15s 4d, his period of service totalled 23 years, 11 months and an annual compensation allowance of £134 12s 3d was paid from that time.
- In 1837 he was described as a Supervisor of Taxes on the marriage certificate of his son William and Eliza G. Thomas.
- His death is recorded in the House of Commons Parliamentary Papers: "Account of Retired Allowances or Superannuations in Public Offices, 1853”, indicating that Charles died 18 March 1852. That record also states that he was a tax collector and that the"Amount" of "Annual Superannuation Allowance" on his behalf that "ceased" upon his death was £134 12s 3d.
