Obituary:
Harold T. Meredith, 87, of Gardiner, a lifelong resident of Ulster County, died early Tuesday, October 27, 2009 at St. Francis Hospital, Poughkeepsie, after a short illness.

A World War II veteran who served for two years in the famed John Deere Battalion in England and Belgium during the war, Meredith ran his own heavy machinery business in the hamlet of Wallkill for nearly 25 years starting in the late 1950's. He was later a member of the Operating Engineers Union, Local 825 for over 20 years before his retirement.

Always interested in machinery, particularly John Deere tractors dating back to his teens when living on the family farm in the Town of Shawangunk, Meredith was one of the few non-union employees to work at the 1964 New York World's Fair.

He had lived in the Town of Gardiner for the past 25 years. Meredith was a charter member of the Wallkill Lions Club, serving the club for over 50 years. He served a term as club president in 1988. He was also a past member of the Shawangunk Volunteer Fire Department.

Born August 26, 1922, he was one of 10 children of the late John Morey and the late Evelyn Thompson Meredith of the Town of Shawangunk, Ulster County. He attended the historic one-room school in the Brunswick area of the Town of Shawangunk.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Jean (Beusman) of New York City who passed away in 1978 and his second wife, Martha (Libby) (LaTulippe) who died in 2008. He was also predeceased by his sisters: Jeanette, Florence, Lucille, Harriet and Esther and brothers, Fred and John.

He is survived by a sister, Dorothy of San Antonio, TX; one brother, Todd of Florida; four children from his first wife: Carol of New York City, Dennis of Santa Clara, CA, Thom and his wife, Ginger of Newtown, PA and Jim and his wife, Mary of South Burlington, VT; stepdaughters, Beverly Tantillo and her husband, Len and Sherry Jensen and her husband, John, both of Gardiner; six Meredith grandchildren: Eric Rabin of Laguna Beach, CA, Carrie Auger of Highland, Morgan Meredith of Santa Ana, CA, Brett Rabin of San Diego, CA, Shane Meredith of Mobile, AL, Kylea Meredith of Pittsburgh, PA, and Andrea Meredith of South Burlington, VT; five LaTulippe grandchildren: Frank Tantillo, Raffaela Benson, Jeannine Ridgeway, Beth Bilyou and Wayne Jensen all of Gardiner; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Calling hours will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., Thursday, October 29, at the Wallkill Funeral Home, 12 Bonaventura Ave. (Rte. 208), Wallkill, with services scheduled for 10 a.m., Friday, October 30, at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Charles Cemetery, Gardiner.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations to the Wallkill Lions Club, PO Box 203, Wallkill, NY 12589 or the Gardiner Volunteer Fire Department, 730 Route 208, Gardiner, NY 12525.
