Thomas Simon Davies was the son of John Lloyd Davies and Mary Ann Herbert, who ran the Emlyn Arms Hotel in Newcastle Emlyn, Wales. He appears to have been known as Thomas Sims Davies in South Africa (according to his marriage certificate, death notice and gravestone), but his birth and census records from Wales confirm that it was originally ‘Simon’. His occupation was Draper.
