Biography
George Frederick Meredith was born on 2 Nov 1878 in Coolbanagher, Co. Laois, Ireland
G.
1 He was baptised on 1 Dec 1878 in Coolbanagher Church of Ireland, Ireland
G.
1 He and
Elizabeth Phillips were married on 22 Jun 1908 in St. James’s Church, Castledermot Parish, Co. Kildare.
2 He and
Mary Kennedy were married ca. 1923 in New York City. He and
Mary Seeberger were married on 21 Apr 1934 in Hudson, New York, USA
G. He died on 12 Sep 1947, at age 68, in Hudson, New York, USA
G.
He emigrated to the USA in 1898. He was enumerated in the 1900 US census as a boarder with the Knott family in Stockport Township, Columbia County, New York State, and described as single, card tender in woollen mill. He must have returned to Ireland shortly after, as he enlisted in the newly formed South African Constabulary and served in South Africa Campaign from 1901-2, being awarded the South African Kings and Queens Medals. In 1907 he was recorded as visiting a friend A. Plewman in Winnipeg on S.S. Campania, arriving in New York on 14 April; he was described as a farmer, single. He was described as a Farmer living at Birtown, Athy, at the time of his marriage in 1908. He was enumerated in the 1911 census as head of household at Ballynamony, Kilkea, Co. Kildare, and described as George Meredith, aged 33, a Farmer. Enumerated in the same household were his wife Elizabeth (aged 47, born in Belfast) and step daughter Millicent Drimmie (aged 17). He enlisted in the South Irish Horse regiment on 9 Sep 1914, but was discharged on 1 Apr 1915 as being unfit for service due to an old compound fracture of the knee sustained 6 years earlier. His address on discharge was Castledermot.
In April 1922 his arrival at St. John, New Brunswick on the ship ‘Melita’ was recorded, with his declared destination being Frank Crawford in Winnipeg [who was the husband of his cousin Maria Wilkinson]. He was described as a farmer, aged 42, single, and a Canadian citizen. He was recorded next in Hudson, New York State in 1923, where his first child was born to Mary Kennedy (apparently his 2nd wife, although it is unclear if he ever divorced his first wife). She died in 1928 leaving four little girls, aged three and a half months to 6 years old. George was unable to care for the children and they were placed in an orphanage. A year later the two younger children were adopted and they were raised by other families.
George was recorded in the 1930 census at Stockport, NY as as a boarder aged 52 in the household of Mary A. Henshaw. He was a carpenter working in a woollen mill. Also in the 1930 census, there were two girls, Ruth and Margaret Meredith, listed as "inmates" in a household consisting of 43 children aged 2 to 15, 4 matrons, a superintendent and a servant. Ruth was 7 years old; Margaret was 4 yrs, 7 mos. The address was 400 State St., Hudson, NY. He was recorded in the 1940 census in Stockport, New York, and described as a night watchmen at a woollen mill. Enumerated in the same household were his wife Mary M, aged 48, daughter Margaret Meredith, aged 14, step-daughter Charlotte Brandow, aged 19, and grandson Robert Brandow, aged 5 months.

He was recorded on the census of 1 May 1911 in the household of Thomas Meredith in Ballycullane, Co. Kildare, and was described as James Meredith, son, Church of Ireland, able to read & write, aged 22, a farmer's son, single, born in Queen's Co.
He was resident in Ballycullane in July 1915, when he was the informant of his father Thomas’s death. According to the Valuation Office records, the responsibility for the farm at Ballycullane passed from his mother Rebecca to James in 1920. By this time the farm was owned rather than leased. The records indicate a change of occupier of the Ballycullane farm from James to Mary E. Meredith [his wife]. Unfortunately the date is unclear but it looks like 1936.
James Armstrong and Mary Meredith were living at Killinure House, Tullow in 1945.

Samuel Meredith
M, #1331, b. about 1804, d. 29 February 1896
Parents
Biography
Samuel Meredith (ca1804-1896)
Samuel Meredith was born ca. 1804.
1 He and
Elizabeth Wilkinson were married on 31 Jan 1826 in Coolbanagher, Co. Laois, Ireland
G.
2 He died on 29 Feb 1896, at age ~92, in Mountbrook, Ballylinan, Co. Laois, Ireland.
3 He was buried on 2 Mar 1896 in St Peter's Church, Maryborough, Co. Laois
G.
4 Samuel Meredith was a Farmer. He was residing at Clonegown, Clonenagh Parish, Co. Laois at the time of his marriage in January 1826. He is believed to have lived at Ballyduff, Moyanna Parish, Co. Laois from 1830 to 1877.
He was recorded in the Tithe Applotment Book of 1830 at Ballyduff as J. Saml. Meredith, a tenant with a landholding of 47 acres, plantation measure (approximately 76 English acres), the tithe being set at £1-1-9. He was recorded in a valuation survey of Ballyduff in 1842 with a landholding of just over 80 acres. He was mentioned again in a valuation survey of 1844 at Ballyduff.
He witnessed the marriage of his daughter Anne Meredith and James Wilkinson on 25 May 1848 in Stradbally Church. He was recorded in the Griffith's Valuation of 1850 at Ballyduff, where he had a house, offices and land of just over 77 acres leased from the Earl of Portarlington with a net annual value of £44. He was also recorded in the 1850 Valuation of Kilmurry, Kilteale Parish, where he leased 15 acres from the Earl of Portarlington having a net annual value of £11.
He witnessed the marriage of his daughter Eliza Meredith and Edward Wilkinson on 20 November 1854 in Stradbally Church. He was present at the death of his wife Elizabeth on 13 July 1873 in Ballyduff. He moved away from Ballyduff in 1877, the lease of the Ballyduff farm passing to his son Henry Meredith. At that time it comprised two plots of just over 77 acres and 6 acres, with a rateable annual valuation of £42-10s. He died in 1896 at the age of 92 in the house of his son George at Monebrock, Ballylinan (also known as Mountbrook).
Research Note: his children's baptisms between 1826 and 1836 were recorded in the Parish Registers of Ballyfin (Thomas, Henry, Eliza, George, Joseph) and Maryborough (Anne, Maria), including the time that Samuel believed to have been at Ballyduff. Is there any significance in this?
