Biography

Rev. Richard MEREDITH was born on 13 May 1833 in Ballybrittas, IrelandG. He and Elizabeth L. were married. He died on 5 Jul 1904, at age 71, in Brooklyn, New YorkG.

He was a Congregational pastor. In 1896 he took charge of the Park Avenue church; this was a branch of the Tompkins Avenue church, where he was also assistant pastor to his brother Rev. Robert Rhoden. He had been pastor of the Simpson M. E. church in New York in 1871.

His application for a passport in 1900 provides his date and place of birth and notes that he arrived in the USA on the ship "City of Manchester," sailing from Queenstown (now Cobh, County Cork) the 8th of August, 1862. He became a naturalized citizen October 12, 1896, in Kings County, New York. His physical description was as follows: 66 3/4 years old, 5' 10", high forehead, blue eyes, medium nose, medium mouth, round & full chin, pure white hair, fair complexion, full face.

He died from blood poisoning, as described by The New York Times July 3, 1904. Sunday, p. 5:

“THE REV. MR. MEREDITH DYING.
Little Hope for Brooklyn Clergyman Ill of Blood Poisoning.

The Rev. Richard Meredith, ex-assistant pastor of the Tompkins Avenue Congregational Church, and one of the best-known clergymen in Brooklyn, is dying from blood poisoning in St. John’s Hospital, that borough.
Some time ago two carbuncles formed on his neck, and about two weeks ago gangrene set in. At the hospital last night it was said that Mr. Meredith was very weak and that the doctors had little or no hope of his recovery.
Mr. Meredith is seventy-two years old and is a brother of the Rev. Dr. Robert R. Meredith, for many years pastor of the Tompkins Avenue Congregational Church. Mr. Meredith’s last charge was the Emmanuel Mission, at Central Avenue and Himrod Street.”

His will dated 9 Apr 1903 (executor Robert J. MacFarland) named the following:

He and Martha MOLLAN were married on 11 Apr 1854 in WC [Wesleyan Chapel?], Sandys St, Newry. He died on 23 Apr 1874, at age ~73, in Rathmines, DublinG. He was buried on 25 Apr 1874 in Church of Ireland, Maryborough, Queen's county.

Thomas Meredith was a Wesleyan minister. In his later years he lived in Rathmines, Dublin.
The following obituary was published by the Methodist Church, courtesy Rev. Roddie of Belfast: from the Minutes of Conference, 1874, p.5:
“THOMAS MEREDITH, whose birth place was Cappagh in the Queen’s County. He feared God from his childhood, and, while yet very young, a friend invited him to go with him to a class-meeting; he went, and in that means of grace, which he greatly prized to the end of his life, he learned the way of salvation by faith which is in Christ Jesus. Some years later, under the influence of a conviction that he was called of God to preach the word, and encouraged by those who had lovingly watched over him, he offered himself as a candidate for our ministry and was accepted by the Conference, and appointed to a Circuit in 1828.
Thence forward, for forty years, in the active discharge of the varied duties of a Methodist Minister, he maintained an unblemished character. He was a man of sound judgment and of great conscientiousness, was faithful in the performance of all the duties of the ministry, and walking closely with God, was mighty in prayer, and powerful in appeals to the conscience. His preaching was much owned of God in the conversion of sinners and in the edification of believers. He was somewhat reserved in manner, but was tender and affectionate in spirit, and a faithful and wise friend. When, on becoming a supernumerary, he settled in Dublin, he rendered valuable service to the Church as long as any strength was given him, and was held in high esteem by the people amongst whom he dwelt.
In his last illness his sufferings were great, but being graciously sustained and comforted through communion with his faithful Lord, he was enabled to glorify God in the fire, and amongst his last utterances were strong expressions of confidence in and love to Him who ‘hath loved us, and hath given himself for us.’ As his life had been even and consistent, so he peacefully departed to be for ever with the Lord, on Thursday the 23rd April, 1874, in the seventy-fourth year of his age and forty-seventh of his ministry.”

His Will of 6 Mar 1874 bequeathed his house at 17 Ormond Road to his wife Martha, and at her decease the house, furniture and half the books to go to his son Samuel, with the remainder of the books to go to his son John Wesley.³

John Wesley MEREDITH was born in 1834 in Enniskillen, IrelandG. He and Elizabeth Sarah WEBSTER were married on 24 Jan 1867 in Centenary Church, Dublin, IrelandG. He died on 5 Apr 1905, at age ~71, in Royal City of Dublin Hospital, Ireland.³

At the time of his daughter’s birth they were living at 63 Percy Row in Dublin and he was a Commercial Clerk. He was described as a Retired Accountant in the 1901 census living in Haddington Road.
The family record by Samuel Turpin noted that John "lived at 97 Haddington Road, Dublin. He was a devoted musician, died 5th April 1905." Also: "In John Meredith's will dated 7th July 1894, he bequeathed on the death of his daughter, Mrs Hall, to George Vanston, his cousin, a house No. 14 Northbrook Road, Dublin, and in the event of George Vanston's death, to his children the house in equal shares. John W. Meredith left a lot of other property to other people."
