Kathleen Eileen MEREDITH1,2,3
F, #2878, b. 13 May 1887, d. 6 March 1973
Parents
Biography
Kathleen Eileen MEREDITH was born on 13 May 1887.2 She was baptised on 22 May 1887 in Killeentierna Church.2 She died on 6 Mar 1973, at age 85, in Our Lady’s Manor, Dalkey, Ireland. She was buried in Mount Jerome Cemetery, Dublin. Although she was registered as Catherine Ellen at birth, and she was enumerated as Catherine Eileeen in the 1901 Ireland census, in later life she was known as Kathleen Meredith.. She was an inspirational headmistress who influenced two generations of children in the school that she established in 1929, which was universally known as “Miss Meredith’s” although its formal name was Pembroke School. Her teacher training had been undertaken in England in Coloma Convent Girls’s School, Croydon. The school eventually closed in 2005, having 60 junior and 75 secondary pupils at the time. The author Maeve Binchy was among the dynamic people who taught there during its 75-year history. Kathleen Meredith died in 1973, aged 85, but until close to her death she came by taxi every day to take the roll.
?An appreciation of her life was published in the Irish Times (4 May 1973, pg. 6):
“Kathleen Meredith was known to a generation of Dublin men and women as one of the kindest teachers that ever was. She had a Froebel Certificate and worked first in Nightingale Hall, then in 1929 she set up Pembroke School in 29 Pembroke Road, Dublin, with one pupil. She eventually bought No. 1 Pembroke Road, and her pupils numbered 150. Despite all efforts to call the school "Pembroke School," it is still known as "Miss Meredith's" even though its founder is now dead, and for several years has been too frail to take any part in the running of the school she started.
Everyone has a different story to tell about Miss Meredith; and what the school was like in "their time." There seems to be a common bond amongst ex-pupils that they were never unhappy here. They were busy, and sometimes wished for big sports grounds that the school didn't have but no pupil ever claims to have been miserable, something that must be as unique as was the character of the kindly headmistress.
GRANDCHILDREN
If ever pupils of Miss Meredith's could send their own children to the same school, they always did so, and eventually there were the grandchildren of past pupils there. Miss Meredith would always be able to dredge up some story about a respected mother or grandmother in her schooldays, which the child would bring home delightedly as ammunition!
I was not a pupil of hers, but taught for seven years in her school. She was probably one of the kindest people I have ever met, with a real concern for children's, happiness as well as a remarkable grasp of educational methods that had come in long after "her day."
As a teacher you would be afraid to mention to Miss Meredith that you had a headache because she was quite likely to call a taxi and send you home at once. I wish I had known her in her earlier years, and never tired of hearing tales of life in the old days, and of her various battles with the Department of Education, and how all school inspectors, much dreaded in other establishments, fell completely under her spell.
She died peacefully one day in March in Our Lady's Manor in Dalkey, and many people who read this will remember with affection years or just months in the front room or the back room, or one of the upstairs rooms, with Miss Meredith calling the roll, and being extremely sympathetic when she heard that someone had measles. Those are the things you remember after the years, when the grammar and the text books are forgotten.
