Mary Russell Cox were married in 1852 in Beaminster Registration District.
3 He and
Charlotte Abbott were married on 23 Apr 1874 in St Clement Danes, Westminster, London, England

4 He was buried on 30 May 1893 in Halstock, Dorset
G.
5 Robert Fitzgerald Meredith spent much of his life in England as Vicar of Halstock in Dorset and Rector of East Chalborough in Somerset. He was educated at Oxford University, and was appointed to the Perpetual Curacy of Halstock in 1843. in 1852 he was appointed one of Her Majesty’s Inspector of Schools. He filed for bankruptcy in 1869, the year after his 1st wife died, with depts amounting to £13,000. In the 1871 census, six of his children are enumerated with him at Portland House, Halstock, while the remaining three (Margaret, Francis and Mary) are with their aunt Georgina Cox in Beaminster (and indexed as Marredith). He petitioned Queen Victoria in 1889 in a failed attempt to revive, in his favour, the Barony of Chirbury, which had become extinct.
The following newspaper account gives some background to his insolvency in 1869:
“A CLERICAL BANKRUPT At the Exeter Bankruptcy Court, on Tuesday, Mr. Commissioner Andrews had before him for last examination Robert F. Meredith, clerk in holy orders, of Halstock, Dorset. His total debts were set down at £12,975, to meet which the assets amounted to only £50, furniture. The solicitor who opposed him on behalf of the creditors said he had had an extraordinary career in England and Ireland. It appeared that his Irish property had been sold by order of the Encumbered Estates Court. Of twelve securities—principally of life insurance policies — only one would realise a surplus; its value was estimated at £300. The creditors held security to the amount of £13,934, the value of which was only £1522, showing a deficiency of £12,412. The bankrupt admitted owing Mr. Atwood, of Salisbury, £800 for money borrowed, and that when served with a writ from that gentleman he put it in the fire. The money was borrowed, he said, for rebuilding schools at Halstock—his living at which place had been twice sequestrated. He said that he had nine children, between the ages of fifteen and two, and that his wife died in August, when he became entitled to a considerable sum under his marriage settlement, which he had forfeited by his bankruptcy. He was ordained at Salisbury in 1842, since which time he had travelled to about a dozen places as curate ; in each he stayed about twelve months ; his chief object, he said, was to get house-rent free, with a small stipend. He held the living of Halstock, worth £170 per annum, for several years, and at the same time had the East Clanaborough living, £260 a year, under an advowson for which his father had negotiated. The advowson was mortgaged in 1857, and Mr. Newman, of Yeovil, the mortgagee, threatened him with imprisonment, upon which he left for London, where he remained, at the expense of £1 a day, with nothing to do. He had lived at Clifton and other places with no occupation; hence his difficulty. His domestic expenses in the two years preceding his bankruptcy were set down at £350 per annum.—His Honour adjourned the case for further investigation. - Liverpool Mercury etc (Liverpool, England), Thursday, July 15, 1869; Issue 6699”.
