John Meredith was born bef. 1740.

John Meredith was recorded as a Freeholder in Clonenagh parish on 15 Jan 1761, and described as “of and at Capagh, farmer”. During that period only Protestants with a freehold of at least 40 shillings a year could vote, and they had to either own the land outright or have a lease for lives.

It is possible that John was the son of Rice Meredith of Rearymore who is mentioned as a witness of a Deed Poll in 1724, in which case he would have been aged at least 51 in 1761. Alternatively, he could have belonged to the next generation - perhaps either the son of John or his brother William who were both mentioned in the 1724 deed. Perhaps less likely, he may have been the cousin John mentioned in the will of Thomas Meredith of Rearymore.

It may be significant that in 1757 Rice Meredith of Rearymore was given title to lands in Clonenagh and Cappagh that had belonged to William Hornby. the father of Mary Hornby whom Rice married in 1759.

It is possible that John of Cappagh was the father of William, Samuel, John, Thomas, Rice and Mary who were born in the second half of the 18th century, although there is no documentary evidence to support this directly.^2,3,4,5,6
