Richard W. Meredith

It is not proven that this Richard is the son of William and Esther. Only the father's name was indicated in the marriage register--eliminating Wm and Elizabeth Meredith as they had another child born in December 1832 (Register p. 24, # 236). Richard was a farmer when he married, a "keeper in [the Maryborough] lunatic asylum" in 1857 (as was his father-in-law a year earlier); in 1865 his occupation was "turnkey," perhaps different words for the same job.
According to the baptismal record of their son William Henry, the family was living in Hospital Street, Birmingham, England in 1859. William’s occupation was given as Policeman.
In 1861 the family was in Manchester, England: 1861 England Census - City of Manchester, Saint Michael's Ward, Ecclesiastical District of St. George, #23 Abel Street: Richard Meredith, Head, Married, 27, "Out of Employment" born Ireland; Ellen Meredith, Wife, 25, Dressmaker, born Ireland; Caroline Meredith 3 born Ireland; William Meredith 1 born Birmingham. Thomas is also said to be born in England (May 1861), but he was baptised in Ireland in July. It looks as if Richard was unemployed and hence the family returned to Ireland shortly after Thomas was born.
In 1871 the family was in Tecumseth tp, Simcoe County, Ontario: Richard 38 Farm Labourer, Ellen 36, Caroline 13 (all born Ireland); William 11 and Thomas 10, both born England; born in Ireland: Esther 9 and Annie 6; and born in Canada: Rice 4 and "Florin" 2. This suggests the family came to Canada in 1866, between the births of Annie and Rice.

In 1891 Richard and Ellen were enumerated in Broadview (located along the now TransCanada highway east of Regina in what is now Saskatchewan, but then was the district of Assiniboia) in the North West Territories. Richard is said to be a farmer, age 50, Ellen is 45 and none of the children are listed with them. Richard and Ellen are found in Denver, Colorado in the 1900 USA census, where Richard was a landlord, born Ireland April 1832, married 34 years and immigrated in 1866 (which would be the year they arrived in Canada, not USA as intended).
In 1911 Richard was living with his daughter Esther Collinge, then a widow, in Victoria, British Columbia. His death reg'n gives birth date of 18 April, 1832; born Ireland, son of William Meredith; resident of 1903 Chambers St, Victoria; cause of death old age debility and heart disease; the form also indicates he had been a resident of Victoria for 6 years, and of Canada for 46 years.
From a presentation by his grandson, Dr. Rice Howard Meredith:
Richard and Mary Ellen Meredith came to Canada "by sailing vessel in 1866 with five children, three more to be born in Canada. They found their way to the Bond Head, Alliston area, 50 miles north of Toronto, to which several families from Queen's County had migrated in 1842, families bearing the names of Meredith, Banting, Hipwell, Carter and others." Rice also noted that Richard died in 1912 in Victoria, Canada.

Thomas Meredith
M, #1260, b. May 1861, d. 7 August 1928
Parents
Biography
Thomas Meredith was born in May 1861. He was baptised on 14 Jul 1861 in Maryborough, Queen's Co., Ireland
G.
1 He and
Elizabeth Margaret Edwards were married on 11 Aug 1886 in Melita, Manitoba
G.
2 He died on 7 Aug 1928, at age 67, in Yorkton, Saskatchewan
G.
2 The 1881 and 1901 Censuses indicate Thomas was born in England, although he was christened in Ireland only two months after his birth (Baptism Register, p. 84, # 671). He also lists himself as of English origin? IGI record has him born 29 March 1862 in Yorkton (obviously an error) and died 7 August 1928.
His place of birth is stated to be Manchester, England on the the marriage certificate of his son Edwin Roy Clifford Meredith. However, there is no record in the England index of births of a Thomas Meredith with mother’s name of Lane having been born in 1861, so it seems that either the English birth was not registered, or that his place of birth was Ireland, and that the family moved back there shortly after the England census was taken on 7 April 1861.
In 1891 Thomas, his wife and eldest son were living in Broadview, Assiniboia district (now Saskatchewan), as were his parents. In the 1901 census his birth date is recorded as 20 April 1862 and he is said to have immigrated to Canada in 1868. He lived in Yorkton, Saskatchewan (Yorkton was part of the North West Territories until 1905). In 1911 he and his family were living at 515-5th Ave. in New Westminster, BC and his occupation is listed as Lumber Merchant. There he is said to have been born in March 1858. The family was said to have had a lovely summer home.
A news item in the "Daily Building Record," Sept. 26, 1912 (the official publication for the Architectural Institute of B.C.) notes that his New Westminster residence was "partially destroyed by fire at a loss of $12,000., covered by insurance." October 25 in the same paper notes that bids are being received for "additions and alterations to a residence for Mrs. Meredith at an approx. cost of $10,000. This building was almost entirely destroyed by fire several days ago. The altered building will be of stone and frame const. containing a hot water heating plan, billiard and reception room, etc."
In August 1904, while a resident of Yorkton, he was a member of the board of the Arrowhead Lumber Company ("Kootenay Mail," 6 Aug. 1904). On the 25th of February, 1905, the Kootenay Mail noted that Thomas had "arrived on his way to the company's mill, where he will remain for a time." And on July 29th, 1905 it was noted: "Thos. Meredith, of Vancouver and Saskatoon, and director of Arrowhead Lumber Co., is making an extended visit to Arrowhead. Mr. Meredith is a large ranch owner and has numerous other commercial undertakings in the Northwest. He is a cousin of Chief Justice Meredith, of Ontario, and has risen by his own exertions to his present position." [note that his relationship to the Chief Justice is very, very distant]
In 1921 Thomas and his family were living at j1419 Pendrell St., in Vancouver. Children still in the household included Gertrude, Caroline, Edwin, Fred and Howard. Thomas's occupation was lumberman.

John Meredith
M, #1264, b. about 1790, d. 15 October 1859
Parents
Biography
John Meredith was born ca. 1790 in Queen's Co., Ireland
G. He and
Jane Wilkinson were married in 1812 in Coolbanagher Parish, Queen's County, Ireland.
1 He died on 15 Oct 1859, at age ~69, in Essa Township, Simcoe County, Ontario
G.
2 The baptism records for John and Jane’s children indicate they lived in Cappagh. In 1838 John was said to be a farmer in Cappagh. In Ontario it is clear they were closely related to the Merediths who are known to have been the daughters of Thomas of The Oak . However, there are substantial discrepancies between the Irish baptism records for some of the children, and the ages later recorded for them on various Canadian censuses.
Overall we conclude this must be the John Meredith who held Blocks 2 (49 acres), 3 (49 acres) and 4 (53 acres) in Cappagh on the Griffiths Valuation in 1850. He occupied a house on Block 4. By 1855 Blocks 2 and 3 were held by John and Edward Dunne, and Block 4 by Mary Delany. It appears likely the family came to Canada approximately 1855, the immigration date son Edward gave on the 1901 census. Canadian land records reveal John purchased his Canadian farm from his brother-in-law, William Carter.
John Meredith died 15 October 1859, Essa township, "a widower leaving 7 children, viz., 4 Boys Thomas, your Petitioner James, John and your Petitioner Edward; and three Girls 2 of whom are married, viz. Rebecca married to her cousin John Meredyth [sic]; Susanna married to James Hovenden; and Jane Meredyth spinster, all of whom are of age [illegible] surviving and Intestate."
[Extracted from: "The Petition of James Meredyth [sic] and Edward Meredyth, both of the township of Essa in the County of Simcoe, Yeoman, the second and fourth sons of John Meredith, late of the same place, deceased" (Simcoe County Surrogate Court, Vol. C, p. 282, file #33, 20 October 1859).]
John and Thomas renounced any claim to the estate, which was valued at about $500 (note, they signed the petition spelling their last name "Meredith"). James and Edward were both residents of Essa at the time. Witnesses to the petition were R. T. Banting (Robert) and John Banting (the Bantings were cousins--their mother was a Meredith).

Rice Meredith1

Parents
Biography
Rice Meredith was born ca. 1820 in Queen's Co., Ireland
G. He and
Catherine Anne Meredith were married on 9 Jul 1846 in Clonenagh Parish, Queen's County.
2 He died on 1 Dec 1886, at age ~66, in Queen's Co., Ireland
G.
3 Rice Meredith was a farmer and resident of "The Fall," at the time of his marriage. Rice and family lived at "The Oak" until at least May 1864, when Frederick was baptised. Two years later, in August 1866 they resided in Derrykearn, Abbeyleix parish. It appears from a deed in 1865 between Rice and Jeremiah Meredith that the family may have left The Oak due to financial difficulties.
Rice and Kate Anne's death dates are recorded on a tombstone in Church of Ireland cemetery in Portlaoise (formerly Maryborough, Queen's County), along with five of their children, but their burials are not recorded in the parish register--assumed to have been buried elsewhere.
