Biography

John Edward Meredith was born on 26 Mar 1852 in 9 Upper Rutland St., Dublin. He was baptised on 21 Apr 1852 in St. George’s Church, DublinG.3 He and Mary D’Esterre were married on 2 Mar 1878 in Holy Trinity Church, TwickenhamG.4 He died on 11 Aug 1912, at age 60, in Maidstone, KentG.
His obituary appeared in the 17 August 1912 edition of the Kent Messenger, transcribed as follows:

"DEATH OF DR. MEREDITH. - It is with regret that we record the death of Dr. Meredith, of Maidstone, which took place at St. Leonard’s-on-Sea, on Sunday evening, after five months’ illness. The deceased gentleman, who was born on March 26th, 1852, was the second son of the late Mr. William Rice Meredith, solicitor, of Dublin. He was educated at Bective College, and afterwards at Trinity College, Dublin, where he graduated B.A. in 1872, and later took the degree of M.B. After working for a year as surgeon to the Inman, Allan and National Lines, he acted as assistant under the late Mr. Lamb, surgeon at Lord Lonsdale's collieries, Whitehaven, when he took his M.D. Dr. Meredith settled in Maidstone in 1875 as successor to the late Mr. Cecil Smith, and he held the appointment of physician to the West Kent Hospital from 1877 to 1911, when he resigned. He was also for the long period of 36½ years medical officer and public vaccinator for No. 1 Maidstone district, resigning this appointment only five weeks ago, while for 33 years he was factory surgeon for the borough. In politics, Dr. Meredith was a staunch Conservative, and in religion a Churchman though he had often been heard to say that "what he favoured most was the religion which he learnt at his mother's knee." The deceased gentleman leaves a widow, two sons and a daughter, with whom much sympathy is felt in their great bereavement. The funeral has been fixed for Thursday at 2.30 at the Cemetery."

Biography

William Ralph Meredith (1840-1923) in the early 1900s
Collection of the Law Society of Upper Canada
Sir William Ralph Meredith was born on 13 Mar 1840 in Westminster tp, Middlesex county, Upper CanadaG. He and Mary Holmes were married on 26 Jun 1861. He died on 22 Aug 1923, at age 83, in Montreal, Quebec. He was buried in St. James' Cemetery, Toronto, OntarioG.1
Sir William R. Meredith was the acknowledged leader of the London Bar in Ontario in the last two decades of the 19th century. He was appointed the Chief Justice of Ontario in recognition of his legal attainments --a position held at the time of his death in 1923. He represented the City of London in the Ontario Legislature for many years and was the leader of the Conservative party in that House. In 1877 he was fined $100, after being found guilty of common assault following an altercation at Toronto Union Station, between himself and the estranged husband of his cousin, Amy Meredith Williams of Port Hope (Craick, 1966).

In 1881 William and his family lived in London, Ontario. He served from 1886 until 1900 as the second President and Vice-Chancellor of what is now the University of Western Ontario, succeeding Bishop Isaac Hellmuth. He then became Chancellor of the University of Toronto. In the 1901 census the family is living in Toronto (Ward 2, p. 16), and William's occupation is listed as Judge. In 1919 he was said to reside at 4 Lamport Avenue, Toronto (Greene, 1919, p.1169).

Armstrong (1986) notes: [William] graduated from the University of Toronto and studied law with and became a partner of Thomas Scatcherd in London. When Scatcherd died in 1876 William succeeded him as city solicitor, and was one of the defence lawyers in the Donnelly trial. In 1872 William was elected to the provincial legistlature as a Conservative and from 1878 to 1894 was the leader of the party and of the opposition in the Legislative Assembly. He was chief justice of the Court of Common Pleas of Ontario until his death in 1923. Knighted in 1896, Sir William sat on two commissions to revise the Ontario statutes and drafted the original 1915 Workmen's Compensation Act.

He left an estate of $133,877 to his children.

Hon. Richard Martin Meredith

M, #3860, b. 27 March 1847, d. 20 May 1934

Parents

FatherJohn Walsingham Cooke Meredith b. 9 May 1809, d. 24 May 1881
MotherSarah Pegler b. 4 Jul 1819, d. 12 Sep 1900

Biography

Hon. Richard Martin Meredith was born on 27 Mar 1847 in London, Canada WestG. He died on 20 May 1934, at age 87, in London, OntarioG. He was buried in Woodland Cemetery, LondonG.1
Richard Martin Meredith studied law with his brother Edmund and then became his partner, specialising in chancery law. He was appointed a judge of the Chancery Division of the High Court of Ontario in 1890. In 1905 he became a judge of the Court of Appeal, in 1912 Chief Justice of the Common Pleas, and finally from 1922 onward until he retired in 1930 President of the High Court. He was also Chancellor of "Western University" (now the University of Western Ontario) from 1912 to 1916. Richard never married, and he died in 1934, leaving an estate of $235,598.

His obituary appeared in the May 22, 1934 edition of The Montreal Gazette, with a broader description of the eminent Merediths of Ontario and Québec::
"THE MEREDITIH FAMILY.
The passing of the Hon. Richard Martin Meredith, former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Ontario, will be widely and sincerely mourned. He belonged to a family in whom nature has succeeded greatly. The root word of the family name, the biographical notices have stressed, means an advocate or pleader, and there have been sufficient examples of Meredith forensic skill to add to the fame of the name as well as to give full authority for what is claimed to be its root significance. Merediths have won universal renown by their pleadings at Bar. Quite a number of them have attained distinction on the Bench, in Ireland and New Zealand as well as in Canada. The Hon. Richard Martin Meredith, who lived to the age of four score years and seven, read law in London, Ont., with his brother, William Ralph. The latter was to become Sir William Meredith and Chief Justice of Ontario. Richard practised law with another brother, Edward, who had a distinguished career at Bar as a criminal lawyer. A surviving brother, Thomas G. Meredith, K.C., is city solicitor of London, Ont. Two other brothers. Sir Vincent Meredith and John S. Meredith, were prominent Canadian bankers, the first-named, it will readily be recalled, having been for a number of years general manager and afterwards president of the Bank of Montreal. Mr. J. S. Meredith was formerly manager of the Merchants Bank, and a third brother, Charles Meredith, was a prominent stock broker. Experience has demonstrated that, whilst many members of the family earned great reputations as jurists, others proved they possessed outstanding business abilities besides sharing the common family qualities of invincible resolution.
Of Irish ancestry, two branches of the family of Merediths have continued their fine traditions alike in Ontario and Quebec. William Collis Meredith, son of the Rev. Thomas Meredith, Fellow of Trinity College, Dublin, came to Canada in his early manhood. He studied law in Montreal and in 1836 was admitted to practice, soon to become one of the leading members of the profession in the Province of Quebec, esteemed for his high character, wide knowledge and amiable disposition. In 1852 he was appointed to the Bench of the Superior Court at Quebec. Seven years afterwards he was elevated to the Court of Queen’s Bench. In 1866 Judge Meredith succeeded Judge Bowen as Chief Justice of the Superior Court of the Province of Quebec, and two years after his retirement in 1884, was knighted by Queen Victoria. Sir William’s son, Frederick E. Meredith, K.C., is today head of the Montreal law firm of Meredith, Holden, Meredith and Company, and was formerly Chancellor of the University of Bishop’s College, Lennoxville. William C. Mcredith, in partnership with his father, not only practises at the Bar, but has written learnedly on several phases of criminal law. Canada owes much to the eminent services that members of the different branches of the Meredith family have rendered in the Dominion and for the Dominion over a period of one hundred years."

Biography

Charles Meredith
(1854-1928)
Charles Meredith was born on 17 Dec 1854 in London, Canada WestG.1 He and Elspeth Hudson Angus were married in Jun 1883 in Montreal, Quebec. He died in 1928, at age ~74.
Charles was referred to as a "prominent financier" in the obituary for his brother Thomas. Armstrong (1986) notes: Charles (1855-1928) also went to Montreal and married a daughter of Richard B. Angus. . . In 1887 he purchased a seat on the Montreal Stock Exchange, of which he was president from 1902 to 1905, and retired because of ill health in 1924. (p. 177)
In 1901 Charles' occupation was listed as broker. His birth year on the census was 1855. He and his wife lived in Montreal and were reported to have 4 servants: a table maid, house maid, groom and maid. They had no children. They lived at 1130 Pine Avenue, next to his brother, in a home now part of McGill University (see http://cac.mcgill.ca/campus/Buildings/Charles_Meredith_House.html). In 1911 they lived on Pine Avenue West (looks like 138, but note reference below to 538?) and employed six servants. They appear in the 1920 USA census in Santa Barbara California, lodgers at the El Mirasol Hotel, January 30. Both are recorded as aliens; Charles arrived in the US in 1920, Elspeth (listed as Elizabeth) arrived in 1919.

Biography

Henry Vincent Meredith (1850-1929)
Sir Henry Vincent Meredith was born on 28 Feb 1850 in London, Canada WestG.1 He and Isabella Brenda Allan were married. He died on 24 Feb 1929, at age 78, in Montreal, Quebec.2
Henry Vincent Meredith entered the Bank of Montreal at London as a junior clerk, but he gained rapid promotion and finished his career as the president of the bank. In recognition of the eminence in the financial world, he was created a baronet, an unusual distinction in Canada (from obituary for his brother, London Free Press, 1945)
In 1881 he was living with his parents in London and his occupation was bank inspector. In 1901 Vincent and his wife were living in Montreal, along with 5 servants: a parlor maid, cook, kitchen maid, house [sic] and ladies maid.

Armstrong (1986) notes: “The dominant figure among those brothers who went into business was Henry Vincent (1850-1929), who married a daughter of Andrew Allan of the Allan Line of steamships. Joining the Bank of Montreal in 1867, he rose to general manager of the bank by 1911, was president from 1913 to 1927, and then chairman. He was also president of the Royal Trust Company and the Royal Victoria Hospital. He received a baronetcy in 1916, becoming Sir Vincent. He left an estate of well over a half-million dollars (pp. 176-177). There were no children.”.
