Sir William Collis Meredith was born on 23 May 1812 in Dublin, IrelandG.¹ He and Sophia Naiters Holmes were married on 20 May 1847 in Christ Church Cathedral, Montreal, QuebecG. He died on 26 Feb 1894, at age 81, in Quebec, CanadaG. He was buried in Mt. Hermon Cemetery.²

William and three of his brothers were granted 100 acres of land in Kilkenny township, Montcalm county, Lower Canada (Quebec) 19 November 1832 (p. 326, Letters Patent, Book M). According to his Who's Who entry: "He studied law [in Ireland], emigrated to Canada, and was called to the bar of Montreal in 1836, becoming Queen's Counsel in 1844. He was also a judge of the Superior Court for the province of Quebec from 1849 till 1859, and of the court of queen's bench for the same province from 1859 till 1866. He was Chief Justice of the Superior Court from 1866 till 1884, when he retired. He received the degree of D.C.L. from Lennoxville university, province of Quebec in 1854, and that of LL.D. from Laval university in 1880. He was knighted in 1886."

Elizabeth remarried after the death of her first husband, Thomas Meredith. She and her second husband emigrated to Canada in 1824, leaving her eldest son and her youngest son in Ireland (Gwyn, 1984). They returned to Ireland in 1833. She is said to have had 7 children by her first husband, Thomas Meredith, and 6 more by her second husband. The eldest of the Burtons was born in Rawdon, Lower Canada (now Quebec) in November 1824 (Parkinson, 2005).
