Rev. Samuel Cooke-Collis Smith1
M, #4186, b. about 1868, d. 1930
Biography
His divorce was reported in the 7 April 1908 edition of the Westminster Gazette, as follows:
"CYPRUS CHAPLAINCY & DIVORCE.
The Rev. Samuel Cooke-Collis Smith, clerk in Holy Orders, petitioned before Mr. Justice Bargrave Deane in the Divorce Division to-day for the dissolution of his marriage on the ground of his wife's misconduct with the co-respondent, Lieutenant William Rice Meredith. The marriage took place at St. Peter's, Eaton Square, on February 5, 1903. After acting as locum tenens in several parishes in Norfolk and near Canterbury, the petitioner, in September 1905, was appointed to a chaplaincy in Cyprus. In June 1906 his wife and child went to a hill station on the island, being joined alterwards by the petitioner. The co-respondent was stationed there with his regiment, and he called on the petitioner and respondent. After a dinner-party, where they all ate fish, Mrs. Cooke-Collis Smith was seized with ptomaine poisoning, and the co-respondent had a slight attack. The respondent being very ill, she told her husband that she loved the co-respondent with all her heart, and she called him by the name of "Reggie." She wished to see him, as she thought she was dying, and her husband allowed her to see him on the instructions of the doctor. The lady recovered eventually, and in May 1907 was ordered to the Riviera. She then came to this country, and next went to Ireland. The petitioner wrote to his wife, but, being dissatisfied that she would not rejoin him, he threw up his chaplaincy in Cyprus. He received a telegram signed Meredith on August 9 asking for an appointment at the Euston Hotel. He went there, but did not find his wife; and, after making a search at various hotels, he found her and the co-respondent at the Waverley Hotel. Mr. Smith persuaded his wife to return with him to Abbots Langley, where they occupied rooms in separate houses. During a visit of the petitioner to London his wife disappeared on August 15, and it was ascertained that she and the co-respondent had lived at Woburn House Hotel from that date to August 20. The petition was undefended, and his lordship granted a decree nisi, with costs, and the custody of the child to the petitioner."
