Henry MEREDITH

Henry MEREDITH was born ca. 1777. He and
Frempoma were married. He died on 9 Feb 1812.
He joined the Royal Navy as a surgeon’s mate in 1795, having failed the examinations of the Royal College of Surgeons. He joined the Royal African Company in 1799 as the assistant surgeon for Cape Coast Castle in the former Gold Coast (now Ghana).
After several promotions, he became Governor of Winnebah Fort around 1809. He was tortured and killed by natives in 1812, the same year that his book “An Account of the Gold Coast” was published.

Fanny NEAL were married. He and
Emily Caroline COCKAINE were married in 1839. He died on 10 Dec 1895 in Ballickmoyler, Co. Laois, Ireland.
Richard entered Trinity College Dublin on Jan 2nd 1826 at the age of 15. The entry in Alumni Dublenenses (1924 edition) indicates that he was the son of Henry Meredith of Dublin who was deceased at that time. He graduated in 1831 with a B.A. Vern.
From his headstone in the church graveyard it clearly states that he was the son of Henry Meredith the Governor of Winnebah fort on the gold coast of Africa.

Rev. Richard Meredith’s obituary appeared on p. 8 of the Irish Times edition of 24 December 1928:
“The Rev. Canon Richard Meredith died at his residence, 28 Corrig avenue, Kingstown, on Saturday last. Canon Meredith graduated in Dublin University in 1869, and was ordained Deacon. He was ordained Priest in the folIowing year. From 1869 to 1876 he was Curate of Clonenagh, and from the latter year till 1919 he was Incumbent of Killahan with Mayo. From 1906 to 1919 he was Prebendary and Canon of Tullomagimma in Leighlin Cathedral.”.
