Biography
Bartholomew Elliott Meredith was born ca. 1807 in Queen's Co., Ireland
G. He and
Anna Meredith were married in 1830 in St. Peter’s Church of Ireland, Dublin.
2,3 He died on 19 Oct 1888, at age ~81, in Waterford, Ireland
G.
Bartholomew Elliott Meredith was one of the founding members of the “Brunswick Constitutional Club of Mountmellick”, which was formed in 1828 “on the principle of preserving the integrity of our Protestant Constitution”.
His eldest known child, Fanny, was christened in Rosenallis in 1831. He was recorded in the Griffith’s Valuation of 1851 as the tenant for 17 acres of bogland at Lackamore, Castlebrack (1851). However, he appears to have moved to. Co. Kerry as early as 1835, according to the place of birth given on his daughter Elizabeth’s death certificate.
Newspaper articles in the Kerry Examiner describe him as a Rate Collector in 1845 and a Revisor of the Poor Law Union in 1846.
He moved subsequently to Waterford where he was first a keeper of the Waterford lunatic asylum in 1861 and later a clerk/accountant.
His death was announced in the 25th October 1888 edition of the Waterford Mirror and Tramore Visitor, as follows:
"DEATH OF AN OLD CITIZEN.
The death of Mr Bartholomew E Meredith, at the residence of his son, 20, Bailey's New street, Waterford, on the 19th inst, removes from our midst an old and respected citizen, The sad event was not unexpected, as the deceased gentleman, who had reached the patriarchal age of 81, was an invalid for too years. He was nearly the last of an old Queen's County family, his only surviving brother being, Manager of the Bank of Ireland, Navan. The funeral on Sunday was very large and respectable. the cortege numbering several hundreds. The remains were interred in the New Cemetery, John's Hill, the chief mourners being Messrs Charles, Rice and Wm Meredith (sons of the deceased), and Messrs John, Charles and Wm Meredith (grandsons) and other relatives. Mr J A Exshaw (Bank of Ireland, Waterford) gave an address at the grave, and in conclusion asked that the well known hymn (from Sankey's collection) 'Safe in the arms of Jesus' be sung, remarking that it was a favourite hymn of the deceased during bis illness."
