Edward Wilkinson
M, #4305, b. about 1770, d. 1842
Parents
Biography
Edward Wilkinson was born ca. 1770. He was baptised on 20 Jun 1774.
1 He and
Elizabeth were married. He died in 1842, at age ~72. He was buried on 3 Sep 1842 in Coolbanagher churchyard, Queen’s County.
The Coolbanagher parish records show the following baptisms for Wilkinsons of Morett:
- 12 Aug 1804 Edward Wilkinson s/o Edward and Elizabeth of Morett
- 11 Mar 1807 Thomas and Anne s/o and d/o Edward & Elizabeth of Morett
It is assumed that Elizabeth is also a child of Edward and Elizabeth on the basis of the naming convention applied to the children of Samuel Meredith and Elizabeth Wilkinson and the fact that she was from Morett when married. However there is no documentary evidence for this.
He is thought to be the Edward Wilkinson buried at Coolbanagher in 1842, described in the register as being of ‘Ballycarney’. A newspaper account of voter registrations for Maryborough in 1841 stated that Edward Wilkinson ‘...lives at Cappacole, not at Ballycarney.. ‘. (Leinster Express, 17 April, 1841). An earlier lease of 1838 linked him to Ballycarnan - this was from Mathew Cassan to Edward Wilkinson for the life of James Wilkinson or 21 years. He was named in the will of his brother John.

Samuel Bond (1858-1923)
Photo from The Sun 3 Jan 1918: BACK IN SYDNEY AGAIN

G.
2 He and
Edith Macleay Dangar were married in 1888 in New South Wales, Australia. He died on 14 Dec 1923, at age 65, in Kempsey, New South Wales, Australia
G.
His obituary was published in the Macleay Argus on Tue 18 Dec 1923, pg. 2, and gives a good account of his life, as follows:
“OBITUARY. MR. SAMUEL BOND.
The death occurred on Friday night of Mr. Samuel Bond, after an illness of some
months which defied medical or surgical skill. For some weeks his friends and
relatives have been anticipating the end of what had been a striking and
eventful career. Big, bluff and hearty, Sam. Bond in his heyday was one of the
striking characters of the public life of the Macleay River. He was a live wire
in all movements for the progress of the town, a progressive citizen, keen
business man, with a heart which corresponded with the size of his body. He was
born in Queen's County, Ireland, and was a son of the late Richard Bond, of that
country. At the age of about 23 he came to Australia, just the type of the early
pioneers of this country. That was some 42 years ago, for his age at the time of
death was 65. For the first two years he followed the calling of a commercial
traveller on the North Coast, and it did not take him long to realise the
wonderful possibilities of this favored region, and after two years "on the
road" he decided to settle and eventually went into partnership in a
storekeeping business with Mr. John Bryson. That was at Frederickton about 1883,
the firm being known as Bryson and Bond, well remembered by the older Macleay
folk. A few years later the firm decided to open a branch at Bowraville and Mr.
Bond went there to manage it. Later on the firm decided to open in Kempsey,
where their operations were carried on on a much larger scale. He was an
alderman for many years, and mayor for several terms.
When the Big Push came on in 1914, the deceased heard the call of country, and
despite the fact that he was then about 56 years of age he enlisted and was
accepted. He must have possessed a fine constitution to have been passed at
that age. He was not at the original landing at Gallipoli on that fateful
morning of the 25th April, 1915, but he followed with the second contingent, and
remained on the Peninsula until the evacuation, rising to the rank of sergeant
in the 20th Battalion. From there he went to the Western Front, and when an
opportunity offered he crossed over to Ireland to see his father, then 96 years
of age (his mother died prior to the war). The shock was so great on the old
gentleman that he did not recover from it and died, some three weeks after his
soldier son had returned to France.
Some three weeks ago Messrs. Joseph Edward and Arthur Bond, of Sydney, and Mr.
Armstrong Bond, of West Kempsey, were up to see him, and although he knew that
his end was not far off he was in the best of spirits. The deceased was married
to Miss Edith W. Dangar, daughter of Mr. W. T. (and the late Mrs.) Dangar, of
"Montrose,". West Kempsey. The widow and two sons (Messrs. Richard Dangar Bond,
Nambucca, and Harry Dangar Bond, Sydney) are left to mourn their loss, and to
them widespread sympathy is extended.
The funeral took place on Sunday afternoon, leaving "Montrose" for the West
Kempsey, Cemetery, where the remains were laid to rest in the Church of England
portion, Canon Ware officiating at a short service at "Montrose" and also at the
graveside. Mr. Jos. T. Walker carried out the funeral arrangements.”.
