Biography

Richard Joseph Patrick MEREDITH was born on 3 May 1882 in Warrington, England. He and Esther Bridget DEEGAN were married on 7 Oct 1908 in Maryborough Roman Catholic Church, Queen’s Co., Ireland.1 He died on 29 Nov 1957, at age 75. He was buried on 1 Dec 1957 in New Cemetery, Portlaoise.
He was the son of Thomas Meredith and Frances Elizabeth Leach of Warrington, England. He was educated at the Duke of York’s Military School and the Royal Hibernian Military School.. He joined the 3rd South Lancashire Regiment in 1900 and transferred to the 4th Leinster Regiment in Ireland in 1904. The 1911 Irish Census records him as a Soldier-Drummer. He was enumerated in the Irish Army Census of 1922 as a Bugler in the 3 Southern Division (indexed in the records as Richard Merridith)

He was baptised into the Roman Catholic faith on 6 Feb 1906 in Maryborough (now Portlaoise) Ireland, where he lived for over 50 years, latterly in Stradbally Road. His obituary was published in the Nationalist and Leinster Times on 7 Dec 1957. It described him as a well-known musician, having played with the Halle Orchestra and the British and Irish Army Bands.2
