She was baptised on 23 May 1809 in Maryborough, Queen's Co., IrelandG.² She and Thomas Meredith were married on 2 Dec 1837 in Mountrath Parish, Queen’s Co., Ireland.³ She died on 15 Aug 1875, at age ~66, in The Oak, Queen's County, IrelandG.^4,5 She was buried on 17 Aug 1875 in Maryborough Parish Church, Queen’s Co., Ireland.⁶

Mary was a resident of Clonenagh Parish at the time of her marriage to Thomas Meredith.She was the daughter of Thomas Meredith of Irey and probably the Mary Meredith whose death at age 68 was registered in 1875 in Mountmellick.

Baptism and birth dates from the Maryborough Parish Register, p. 109. 1901 Census has Susanna a widow living with Jennie, James and Mary A[nne?] in Toronto Centre, Ward 3, p. 1. Her birth date is listed as 16 December 1824. She is said to have immigrated to Canada in 1830, which cannot be correct. From a passenger list we know she travelled from Liverpool to New York on the ship Excelsior, arriving on 28 Jun 1854, en route to Canada. The passengers were James 39 Susan 28 Richard 13 [brother of James] Mary Ann 4.

William (Of Ballycarnan) Meredith¹

Biography

William (Of Ballycarnan) Meredith was born ca. 1789 in possibly Queens County, Ireland. He and Elizabeth Sothern were married in 1818 in Ireland. He died on 7 Nov 1867, at age ~78, in Ballycarnan, Queen's CountyG.² He was buried on 9 Nov 1867 in Maryborough, Queen's Co., IrelandG.³

William Meredith obtained a 30-year lease from Matthew Sheffield Cassan for 46 acres of land in Ballycarnan in April 1830, and he was listed there in the Tithe Applotment records of 1833. Several other lessees, all with Irish names, also were granted leases, but theirs were renewable annually. The following is the wording on William's lease:

“Lease dated 3rd April, 1830, from Mathew Cassan to William Meredith, for the life of Christian [presume this should be Christopher] Meredith, or 31 years from 1830, at the yearly rent of £30 ; covenant to bring to the Dwelling-house of the Lessor 45 statutable kishes of turf, and every Christmas two fat pullets, and in default thereof, to pay 1s. for each kish of turf, and 1s. for each pullet, to be recovered by distress as rent, and in case of no direction being given to Lessee in respect of said turf and fowl, he covenanted to pay 1s. in the pound receiver's fees ; covenant against alienation under a penalty of £50 sterling. The quantity stated in the lease is 27a. 0r. 26p. Irish plantation measure. The original lease is not in hand, but a copy obtained from the tenant will be handed to the purchaser.”

A list of voters for Maryborough East shows William Meredith of Ballycarnan, registered 20 October 1840. He may have been a brother of Anne Meredith who married Christopher Brennan in 1814. In 1859 both Christopher, age 34 and William age 65 were registered in the Queen's county gaol, charged with common assault.

The date and age of death on his headstone of 6 Nov 1867 aged 71 differs from his death registration details of 7 Nov 1867 aged 77.

There is no documentary evidence for William of Ballycarnan being a son of John Meredith and Esther Hill. The relationship is assumed here on the basis of a connection referred to in a bankruptcy case of 1878 against Samuel Meredith of Clondarrig, which implies that Samuel’s father Rice Meredith was a brother of William of Ballycarnan. This assumed relationship is supported further by the results from autosomal DNA analysis, which show a close relationship of William to Richard Meredith, another son of John Meredith and Esther Hill. There is further support from a deed of 1818 between Christopher Sothern of the 1st part, Samuel Meredith of Clondarrig son of John Meredith of the 2nd part, and Elizabeth Sothern otherwise Meredith daughter of Christopher Sothern of the 3rd part.
