William Carter

Biography

William Carter was born in Nov 1796 in Queen's Co., IrelandG. He and Maria Meredith were married in 1820 in Diocese of Ossory, Ireland.¹ He died on 21 Jul 1876, at age 79, in Ontario. He was buried in Christ Church Cemetery, Middletown, Simcoe County.²

Residents of Clonboye, Queen's county, Ireland when son John christened in 1826. The Carters were among the first of the Meredith-related families to come to Canada. Volume II of the book "A History of Simcoe County" identifies William and Edward Carter as being amongst those settlers arriving before 1837. Both men lived on Lot 23, Concession 8 of Tecumseth tp (Hunter, Vol. II, p. 304: available online at ; also at). Unfortunately, the 1851 census for Simcoe county has not survived. In 1861 William and his family were living in West Gwillimbury tp, p. 23, lines 36-41. William was said to aged 79 years and 8 months when he died. Tombstone photo at:.

Mary Anne Meredith was born on 27 Sep 1867 in County Laois, Ireland.² She and William Sheppard were married on 28 Apr 1888 in Killadysert Church, Co. ClareG.³ She died in 1932, at age ~65.⁴ She was buried in Riverside Cemetery, Grafton, MassachusettsG.⁴

In 1894 Samuel and his daughter Mary Sheppard 26, married, with Mary's three children, sailed from Queenstown to Philadelphia on the ship British Princess, departed 5 Sept. 1894. They were said to be residents of Portarlington. Mary had previously visited Worcester, Mass. in 1893. She had $60. with her, and was to visit her brother in Worcester, Mass.?The 1900 census shows Mary Anne as an inmate in a hospital for the insane in Worcester. Her two eldest children were living with her parents. She is found in this hospital in all subequent censuses, up to and including 1930.

Her headstone inscription is on the south face the Gilman O. & Mary (Cole) White monument.
