Biography

David Meredith died aft. 1691.
He was from Gowresse in Montgomeryshire, Wales. Gowresse appears to have been in Llanwyddelan parish, and is more usually spelt as Gowres in the records, and sometimes as Gowress and Gowross.

The Powis Castle Estate Records (National Library of Wales) mentions a bond for£200, dated 13 Dec 1652 from David Meredith to Richard, Lord Herbert, Baron of Chirbury for the performance of his office of bailiff.

A David Meredith of Gowres was recorded as a Juror in a Great Session at Pool (Welshpool) in 1690-91.

The will of Arthur Kyfffin of Llanwyddelan of 1691, proved in 1692, appointed his ‘loving cousin David Meredith of Gowres’ as sole executor. A John Meredith of ‘Gowres in Llanwrthelan Parish’ had married Ann Kyffin, an Aunt of Arthur Kyffin, so it can be assumed that John Meredith of Gowres is the father of David Meredith, and that Llanwrthelan is an alternative spelling of the present-day Llanwyddelan.

According to the Heraldic Visitations of 1586-1613, David’s father John Meredith was a direct male descendant (of the 12th generation) from Cynfelyn ap Dolffyn, Prince of Powys, who was in turn a descendant of Bleddyn ap Cynfyn, King of Gwynedd and Powys in the 11th century.

Genealogical Manuscript GOMS 276 p108,109 gives the lineage of Herbert and Meredith and refers to David Meredith of Gowresse.1,2,3,4,5
