Biography

Charles Geoffrey Meredith was born on 30 Mar 1922 in Tyddyn Cottages, Mold, Flintshire.
1 He and
Audrey Jean Carter were married on 1 Mar 1949 in St. Joseph’s RC Church, Castleford.
1 He died on 26 Apr 1977, at age 55, in Banbury, Oxfordshire.
1 He served in WW2 as a Lance Corporal in the 10th Royal Hussars with service number 7896832. He was awarded the Military Medal for gallantry for his actions during the advance in Sept. 1944 in Italy.
The recommendation made by his commanding officer was as follows:
“On the 23rd September 1944 L/C Meredith was in command of a Stuart Tank which was part of a patrol commanded by 7916686 APLS Lindsay L.V. attached to ”A” Sqn 10th Royal Hussars (PWO). The Sqn was supporting the 2/8 Ghurka Rifles in their attack over the River Marecchia on to the S. Arcangelo feature. The infantry captured their objective and were subjected to the most intense shelling and mortar fire, causing very heavy casualties.
The Runneys were being used to carry ammn forward to the infantry as they were unable to get their own supporting arms forward. The CC 3 Lt.Fd Amb saw that the Stuarts were able to get up to the infantry and asked L/Cp1. to volunteer to go and fetch wounded back. This he did without hesitation and was responsible, with his Patrol Leader Sgt. Lindsay, for evacuating throughout that day, and the night 23rd/24th Sep. some 50 or 60 wounded Ghurkas. In addition he collected two casualties from a F.C.O’s tank belonging to 90/100 Fd Bty RA which had been knocked out and the crew wounded inside. This was under direct shellfire.
There is no doubt that L/Cpl. Meredith’s courage was responsible for helping to save a large number of British and Ghurka lives. His Stuart was under continual and observed fire both whilst picking up the wounded and whilst effecting their evacuation over the river bed.
L/Cpl. Meredith's coolness and efficiency and bravery in the face of the enemy was an example to all.
This NCO has continued to show Gallantry and Great Initiative on numerous occasions during the period in question.
(Signed) D.R.B. Kaye [signature] Lieut.Col.
CMF Commanding 10th Royal Hussars (PWO)
Date received by Brigade:12 Jan 45”
A newspaper report of his award described how he preferred to stay in the ranks rather than take a commission, and that at El Alamein, he was one of two to survive out of his troop.
After the war, he ran a horse-box business before managing the Red Lion pub in Bloxham and then worked at Wrenches Garage, (now Hartwells of Banbury).

Francis Matthew Peter Meredith was born on 3 Sep 1923 in Holywell Registration District, Flintshire.
1 He and
Priscilla Joyce Taylor were married on 16 Dec 1947 in Banbury, Oxfordshire. He died on 21 Mar 1978, at age 54, in Banbury, Oxfordshire.
2 He was a research chemist at Aluminium Laboratories in Banbury, working in his early career in the Oils and Lacquers Section led by Roman Guminski.
He was co-author with R. Guminski of two papers published in the Transactions and Communications of the Journal of The Oil & Colour Chemists' Association, both in 1961:
- ‘Lacquer Coating of Aluminium/Magnesium Alloys’, and
- ‘Methods of Testing Certain Mechanical Properties of Lacquer Films’
They also co-authored two papers in the Transactions of the International Journal of Surface Engineering and Coatings:
- ‘The Performance of Clear Lacquers on Aluminium Surfaces’ (1963), and
- ‘Performance of Leafing Aluminium Paints with Various Pretreatments and Undercoats on Aluminium Alloys’ (1966).
He specialised in surface coatings and did much work with non-stick frying pans and paints. He worked on the recycling of aluminium in his final year when he was dying of cancer, resulting in a patent filed posthumously in his name in 1980, titled ‘Recovery of coated aluminium scrap’.
Aluminium Laboratories Ltd. was a subsidiary of Aluminium Ltd., itself part of the Alcan group. It was formed in 1936 to carry out research, development and exploration for the Aluminium Ltd. group of companies. The Banbury Laboratories of the company were built in 1938, with the responsibility for research on the problems of fabrication and utilization of aluminium. The laboratories were taken over by the Ministry of Aircraft Production during the Second World War. Work at Banbury restarted in 1946, and the premises needed to be extended as a result of the expansion of the aluminium industry during the War.
