Rice MEREDITH was born ca. 1850 in Derrylough, Queens County, Ireland
G. He was baptised in Rosenallis, Queen’s Co., Ireland
G.
2 He and
Eveline Margaret JOHNSON were married on 8 Jun 1881 in St Bartholomew's Parish, Dublin, Ireland. He and
Emily C. WATERS were married on 6 Feb 1884 in St. Stephen's Church, Dublin, Ireland
G.
3 He died on 29 Dec 1897 in The Rath, Co. Meath, Ireland
G.
4,5 He was baptised between November 1849 and September 1850. He was well-known as a race horse breeder and trainer, a thrice winner of the Irish Derby. He moved to Curragh from Derrylough, which was sold to the Deverells in about 1890, and subsequently to Rathbride Manor.
His career, both the pinnacle and subsequent enforced retirement, is well-summarised in the following extract from the book “The Irish Derby 1866-1979” (Guy St John Williams and Francis P.M. Hyland, p. 64, publ. Allen, London, 1980):
“Kentish Fire was the first of three Irish Derby winners trained by Rice Meredith, the outstanding Irish flat race trainer between the Connolly and Dawson eras. Formerly a well-known gentleman rider, Rice Meredith succeeded the Connollys at Curragh View, where the former Connolly apprentice, Michael Dawson, remained as stable jockey. Rapidly recognized as a shrewd and skilful trainer, whose judgement was rarely proved wrong, in 1891 Rice Meredith moved to Rathbride Manor, which he made into the finest yard in Ireland and whence his runners swept all before them both at home and in England. Alas, in racing triumph and disaster are seldom far removed and at Kilkenny in 1893 Rice Meredith was called before the Stewards to explain the discrepancy in running of Master Joe on successive days. Not satisfied with the explanations of Rice Meredith and his jockey, Malone, the Kilkenny Stewards referred the case to the Turf Club. At the subsequent enquiry several prominent bookmakers were asked to produce their books for examination. The result was that both Rice Meredith and Malone were warned off. Living in enforced and heartbroken retirement at The Rath, Kilsallaghan, Co. Dublin, Rice Meredith broke a leg while out hunting with the Ward Union in November 1897 and suffered a fatal heart attack a month later. Thus ended the sadly abbreviated career of one of the most brilliant trainers in the annals of the Irish Derby.”
Rice was also evidently a keen hunter with hounds, as a family scrapbook includes numerous clippings reporting on the hunts of the "Ward Hounds." One clipping notes: . . . Baytown where our quarry was loosed away. ...The deer took us thourough . . . and she was safely taken at . . . “. These were hunts for deer. Rice Meredith is frequently named as one of those completing the hunt, and his son "Master Meredith" (Evelyn) is also named in a couple of them.
His death was reported in the sports section of The Times, 31 Dec. 1897:
"Mr. Rice Meredith, a well known trainer of racehorses, died somewhat suddenly, on Wednesday night, at his residence, the Rath, Kilsallaghan, county Dublin. He fractured his leg recently in the hunting field and never recovered the shock to his system. As a trainer he was very successful, some of the horses passing from his stables having won the principal races in Ireland and a few of the not least important in England."
An obituary in the possession of his great grand-daughter notes:
"This gentleman, who was very popular with the Irish as well as English racegoers, and who trained at Rathbride Manor, Curragh, some good horses for members of the Turf Club, died at his residence, The Rath, Kilsallaghan, on Wed. night at 9. The deceased gentleman met with an accident about 6 weeks ago, which resulted in his leg being broken, and up to Weds. he was steadily improving, being about on crutches for about a week. He was retiring to bed on Wed night, he was taken suddenly ill, and in a few minutes he expired."

William Meredith was living in Rosenallis, Queen’s County at the time of his marriage in 1879. Later that year an indenture records the details of his lease for a farm at Ballychristal, Geashill, Kings County. He sold the farm in 1892, and two years later a notice of sale appeared for his residence of Thornton Lodge, a farm and stud at Kilsallaghan, Co. Dublin. The stud of 21 horses included thoroughbred racers. The reason for the sale was given as his departure for Australia. However, there is no evidence of his emigration, or of his return to Ireland.
He is recorded in the 1911 Ireland census at Grand Canal Quay, Dublin, and described as William Meredith, head of household, Church of Ireland, aged 59, Caretaker, born in Queen’s County. Enumerated in the same household are Camille Meredith (wife, aged 50) and Herbert R. B. Meredith, (son, aged 22). He was evidently the caretaker of the Dublin Dogs’ and Cat’s Home that had been located there since 1885. It had been the official pound for stray dogs following the passing of the Dog’s Act in 1906.
William and Camille emigrated to Canada in 1919 to join their only surviving child.

John Baldwin Hoystead MEREDITH1

G. He was baptised on 23 Mar 1865 in Rosenallis, Queen’s Co., Ireland
G.

G. He died on 1 Jan 1942, at age 77, in Maitland, Australia
G.
John was orphaned at the age of nine, according to family stories and some online biographies. However the death certificates of his parents show that he would have been 14 when orphaned in 1879.
He was educated at Arlington College, Port Arlington. He studied medicine in Dublin, 1882-1887. In 1888 he qualified as a licentiate of the Royal College of Surgeons and Physicians, Edinburgh, and the Faculty of Physicians and Surgeons, Glasgow. He became engaged to Harriet Waters and hoped to marry and practice in Ireland, but then decided to try for passage to the colonies as ship's doctor.
He immigrated to Australia in 1888 and bought into a medical practice in Raymond Terrace, New South Wales. His fiancee Harriet Eveline Waters of County Kildare arrived 2 years later (age 23 years) after the death of her father, who had prevented her leaving Ireland. They were married in Sydney the day she landed.
See also his entry in the Australian Dictionary of Biography: http://adb.anu.edu.au/biography/meredith-john-baldwin-hoystead-7559 (which as of June 2019 gives the incorrect age for when he was orphaned).

Thomas MEREDITH1

Parents
Biography
Thomas MEREDITH was born ca. 1702. He died on 2 Dec 1761 in Queen's Co., Ireland
G.
2 The earliest reference to Thomas Meredith of Rearymore is in a deed of 1751 (which is cited in a later deed of 1765). This was a lease for three lives, these being Thomas, Rice and Mathew Meredith, the eldest and youngest sons of Thomas, and was for the rental of over 320 Irish acres of meadow and pasture at Rearymore as well as the bog there. The purpose of the 1765 deed would have been to officially register the 1751 deed that it cited, as Thomas was deceased by then.
A subsequent reference to Thomas Meredith of Rearymore is found in a deed of lease of 1760 with his eldest son Rice Meredith.
Thomas was buried in St Brigid’s, Rosenallis. His gravestone reads: "Here lyeth the body of Thomas Meredith who departed this life the 2nd day of December in the year of our Lord 1761, aged 59 years."
His gravestone is adjacent to that of Rice Meredith of Rearymore who died in 1732, who is assumed to be the father of Thomas.
His will was proved in 1761 and named his mother Elizabeth, sister Margaret Jones, cousin John Meredith, sons Richard and Mathew, and daughters Mary Collins, Elizabeth, Rachell wife of Henry Greenham, Esther and Mary Anne.
It is probable that the John Meredith named as a cousin in his will could be John Meredith of Templeraney in Co. Wicklow, son of Matthias Meredith.

Richard MEREDITH
M, #2974
Parents
Biography
The only reference to Richard, son of Thomas Meredith is in Betham’s transcription of Thomas’s will.
The names of the children look to be in order of age in the transcription, with Richard the eldest, and there is no mention of Rice. But we know from other sources that Rice was the eldest son, so it seems likely that Richard and Rice are one and the same person. Perhaps the word was Rice in the original manuscript and it was read as Ricd and transcribed as Richard. (Ricd. with a superscript was often used as an abbreviation for Richard).
