He was the second son of Robert Oakes and Georgina Wilson of Ellerslie House, Bray, Co. Wicklow.
The obituary of Robert Leslie Oakes was published in the BMJ in 2000 as follows:
“Robert Leslie Oakes: Former general practitioner St Stephen, Cornwall, 1946-76 (b Dublin 1913; q Trinity College Dublin 1936), d 11 December 1999. He did many house jobs in England before joining the colonial medical service for two years. He served in the emergency medical service and the Royal Navy during the second world war and then entered general practice. His main hobby was to walk in the Cornish countryside and along the Cornish coastal park. He leaves a wife, Vera; four children; and seven grandchildren.”.^2,4

John MEREDITH was born ca. 1835 in Cappagh, Clonenagh parish, Queen's County, Ireland.¹ He and Tamar METCALF were married on 5 Jan 1879 in Maryborough, Queen's Co., IrelandG.² He died on 23 Dec 1901, at age ~66, in Cappagh.³ He was buried on 25 Dec 1901 in St. Peter's Church, Maryborough, Queen's County.⁴

His father’s tenancy (Block #7, Cappagh) was passed on to a John Meredith in 1876. In the 1901 census John was a widower, aged 66. Three of his children were living with him at that time. They lived in a 3-room house with walls made of brick or stone, a roof of thatch or wood and 4 windows at the front of the house. Block #7 was not recorded as having passed on to Charles (assumed to be his son) until 1906 (it was not unheard of for there to be a gap of several years before the change in title was recorded).

He was the son of Edward Osborne, a Master Shoemaker, and Mary King. He was a Telegraphist.
His obituary appeared in the Cork Examiner on 06 March 1908, as follows:

'DEATH OF A POST-OFFICE OFFICIAL
The respect and esteem in which the late Mr. Bernard Osborne, of the local
telegraph staff, was held not only by his colleagues in the G.P.O., but by the
citizens generally, was amply demonstrated in the large and representative
character of the funeral cortege when the remains were conveyed from the South
Infirmary to their last resting place in the New Cemetery. Deceased, whose like
span had been shortened so unexpectedly, was one of the few remaining
telegraphists who did yeoman service in handling the heavy telegraphic newspaper
work in the stormy days of the Land League agitation. and in later years when
the Parnell split acted as a disturbing influence on the publie mind. Death
claimed him in the prime of his manhood - he was only 40, and the regret for his
loss is accentuated by the fact that he leaves a widow and young family to mourn
him. Two beautiful wreaths were sent by his late colleagues in the Post-office.
The chief mourners were -Mr. J. Osborne (brother), Masters J. and T Osborne
(nephews). Mr. T. W. Douglas (brother-in-law).
Amongst the members of the staff present were - Messrs. R. W. Keogh (chief
clerk), Dodds (superintendent), James Barry, Michael Riordan, and M. O'Connor
(assistant superintendents) : C. Bourke, J. Bullen, P. Moynihan, W. Wallace T.

O'Grady, O'Leary, O'Neill, Sewell, Mountjoy: Cronin, Buckley, Herbert, Reed,
junr: Corbett, Treacy, M'Carthy, Kelleher, Burbridge, Collins, O'Callaghan,
Brennan, Warren, Walsh, Downing, Rourke, Drury, Lynch, Aylmer. M'Carthv. Murphy,
Riordan, J. O'Neill, Corcoran, Hailes, Caulfield, etc.
Amongst the genera! public were - Messrs. M'Dowell, Kemp, Downing, Cotterell,
