He is believed to be the son whose birth was announced in the Dublin Mail on 31 Dec 1849: “December 25, at Dunfanaghy, county Donegal, Mrs. Meredith, the wife of William Meredith, Esq., Sub-Inspector of Constabulary, of a son”. This is consistent with the death of Henry Meredith aged 17 in 1866.

Eliza G. Thomas was the daughter of Anthony Thomas, vicar of Castlemore, and his wife Margaret Garrett. She was a spinster living at Castlemore vicarage at the time of her marriage in 1860.

She emigrated to Canada the year after her husband's death, travelling from Londonderry on the Sarmatian and arriving in Québec on 3 August 1873. The passenger list gave her age 35 - she travelled with two sons George (age 12) and James (age 11), and a James Thomas (aged 3) who may have been a brother.¹
