William MEREDITH

Biography

William MEREDITH was born bef. 1785.
The only evidence we have for this person is that a John, William. and Mary Meredith all name their father as a William Meredith, occupation Weaver, on their marriage certificates. It is assumed that they all refer to the same person, as there is no other William Meredith, Weaver, known from the documentary record. The marriages were in Co. Wicklow and it is assumed that is where this William Meredith lived. There is a considerable age difference between the oldest, John, and the youngest, Mary, so he may have been married more than once.

The marriages of his assumed sons John and William were in a Registrar's Office and made according to the provisions of the Act 7th and 8th Vic. chap. 81 (An Act for Marriages in Ireland; and for registering such Marriages, which was passed on 9 August 1844). John's marriage to the same person was subsequently celebrated in a Roman Catholic chapel, and it is assumed that William 's was too. So it is possible that this Meredith family line was originally Protestant and married into Catholic families.

There is no known connection with the Co. Wicklow branch of the Merediths that date back to the 17th Century. The locations of some of the marriages of his assumed children are quite close to the border with Co. Carlow, so there is a possibility that this family line is connected to the Carlow Merediths (who were Protestant).
